Division I football teams, especially at the G5 level, can be atop the highest mountain one year and be dead last the next. Case in point — Western Kentucky.
While not losing too many players (the Tops were one of the youngest teams in college football last year, after all), 2019 might still nonetheless have a very different feel to it.
In this series, we’re going to take a look at what the Hilltoppers are losing and who is next in line to replace them in the first year of the Tyson Helton era.

Losing
Mik’Quan Deane
The red-shirt senior truly opened up the Hilltopper air attack in 2018. A JuCo transfer from NE Oklahoma A&M, Dean hauled in 55 passes for 673 yards and seven touchdowns, being the Next Man Up in his own right last year after filing in for Deon Yelder.
Next Men Up
Kyle Fourtenbary
Fourtenbary was the true back up for Deane, considering he sat right behind Deane in receptions at TE. Kyle had 302 yards with two touchdowns this past year. I look for him to get more yards and playing time this year, and he may get more looks if Helton goes with the two tight end set with the wide outs spread and possibly a back for extra protection.
Kris Leach
Leach saw limited time last year, logging two receptions for 17 total yards. He’s going to get more looks this year with Deane graduating so look for better numbers. He was a true freshman last year.
Steven Witchoskey
Yes the Pixar fan in me thought this was the same last name as Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. Sadly, no dice. He had one reception for seven yards last season. That was against Charlotte and he didn’t have another reception the rest of the year. True sophomore last year.
