The search for Western Kentucky’s head coach ended a lot sooner than I think most, if not all, of us thought, as Tyson Helton has been named the 21st head coach in the now 101-year history of Western Kentucky football.
Helton comes to the Hill with some buzz, having been the offensive coordinator during the 2014 and 2015 seasons under Jeff Brohm, the former of which saw a 67–66 upset win over a Top 25 Marshall in Huntington and the latter of which saw the first of consecutive Conference USA championships.
However, Helton’s first year at Tennessee has been uneasy, to say the least — the Vols rank 107th in scoring offense (22.9 points per game), 96th in passing offense and 111th in rushing offense (stats courtesy of FootballScoop).
Call me an optimist, but I don’t think those types of numbers are entirely on Helton’s abilities as an OC/play caller and playing Georgia, Alabama and Florida this year certainly don’t help those numbers.
Hey, he helped beat Kentucky, at least!
Regardless, I think I, and a majority of our writing staff, are excited for this hire but I’m surprised to see how many people aren’t incredibly excited for this hire. I’m willing to admit Helton, himself, wont be the fix to all the problems but I like him as a starting point.
