On Monday afternoon, head coach Tyson Helton held his weekly press conference to recap the Army win and preview the Homecoming matchup against Charlotte.
Here is a recap of what he said:
Looking forward to homecoming this week and another great atmosphere
Charlotte averages 33 points per game and they should be a good challenge for our defense
“It’s gonna take multiple tacklers to get (Benny Lemay) him down”
“We’re going to try to go out there and score 30+ points and go out and win the game”
“It’s about getting the W, its about winning the game”
“I felt like last game we played a great complete team game”
“We held on the ball and controlled the clock”
“We’re starting to maximize the guys that we have and utilize them”
Got Garland LeFrance in there
Utilized the screen game and jet sweeps
“Hopefully our best football is ahead of us offensively”
“We want to play a complete game offensively”
“We’re working hard towards that”
“We’ve been able to move the ball on the ground and help our defense”
Each game takes on it’s own dynamic
“We’ve gotten into the game and made adjustments”
Don’t do things that beat you and turn the ball over and make stupid penalties
Only had two penalties last game and zero on offense
“I do feel like we’re facing a good offense and we need to put 30 points on the board”
“I’d love to eat my words and have us lean on defense again”
We have to go get it done offensively
“This past game was Ty’s best game”
He was really comfortable
He didn’t have the same errors he had his first two games
He ran the offense extremely well and took care of the football
The first drive drops were the only plays that stood out as missed opportunities
“Excited for where we’re going but just waiting for us to explode”
“ Ty has gained my trust”
“We’re letting him make sure checks at the line of scrimmage”
He’s getting comfortable and needs to build off of that
Has a ton of confidence in Cory Munson
“He reminds me of Ricky Vaughn from Major League”
He’s got a strong leg and can make it from any distance
Expecting him to make all of his kicks isn’t realistic since he’s a freshman
“Glad he’s with us because he’s very talented”
“We’re going to count on him down the stretch to make a big kick”
“We’re going to continue to embrace the underdog role and have something to prove”
“We really embraced the fact that we shouldn’t be underdog in our own house”
You can’t get caught up with people patting you on the back
Got to keep edge that you had in first six games
“I think they’ve responded well”
“I haven’t talked to them about last year’s game. Every year is different”
“You don’t really have to talk about it. The pride factor is there”
Charlotte is a new staff and football team, they’re doing a great job
“If we do what we’re supposed to do and control what we can control we should be fine”
“We’re going to have to play really good football, we can’t show up and expect things to happen”
“We have to go out there and make it happen”
Lichon Terrell and Jeremy Darvin both have high ankle sprains and should be out for a couple of weeks but we’re not sure
“We’ve got 5 other guys that can do the job at defensive tackle”
“That’s the one we’ve got depth at”
They’ll be back as fast as they can
Overall you can tell that Helton is continuing to gain confidence in his team. I was a little surprised he was so focused on the offense during this as well as the defense has played but he is an offensive-oriented coach so it’s not too surprising. It was refreshing to hear him challenge the offense to take the next step. As I said on twitter, Charlotte’s offense is bad and this is the perfect game to break out offensively.
Tune back for a lot more coverage for this week’s game against the 49ers. WKU Football has moved past the just make a bowl phase and now has legitimate Conference Title aspirations. Taking care of business against an inferior conference opponent will go a long way towards proving that WKU is legitimate.
