On Monday afternoon, head coach Tyson Helton held his weekly press conference to recap the Charlotte win and preview the Moonshine Throwdown matchup against Marshall.
Here is a recap of what he said:
Very excited for opportunity against Marshall
“We play really good football teams down the stretch”
“If you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the best”
Doc Holliday does a great job with his team
“Should be a very challenging game but it’s a game we’re excited to play”
Want them to be focused on playing the game and doing the job
“We’re naturally motivated to play a great game against a good Marshall team”
“2014 game was the best game I ever have been associated with”
Even over Rose Bowl game against Penn State (while at USC)
Favorite game of all time
“Two great football teams and we knew whoever scored last would win”
“We have to try to rekindle that magic like last time”
“We knew we wanted to hit 30 (points), was hoping we could do more”
“We ended up kicking five field goals”
“Felt good about offensive performance and what we did”
“We need to come up with more touchdowns in red zone”
Marshall’s too good of a football team to settle for field goals
Guys are playing with a lot of confidence the last two weeks
“We need to put more points on the board”
“We’ve got a lot of playmakers”
“It will be our job to call the right play”
“We did a good job last game with flea flickers and trick plays”
“We’re doing all the right things, but we’ve got to create explosive plays down the stretch”
“Getting to six wins is always in the back of your mind but we’re taking it one game at a time”
“I want to be more than bowl eligible, I want to go win a conference title”
You do that and everything falls into place, it happens naturally
“I want to get play Marshall, get a win and keep on going”
“You don’t have to bring up (last year’s game)”
“Knox is a very good player. We’ll have to contain him”
They’ve got a talented quarterback that can do it all.
“We’ll have our hands full to go into Marshall and get a win”
“I love playing afternoon games”
Our players enjoyed it too, we liked set up (against Charlotte) and hopefully, that carries over to this weeks game
“It was great to see him have a big game (Lucky Jackson)”
“He’s the backbone of this team”
(On new shoes they handed out today). “We try to reward them, we’re allowed to do it and it motivates them.”
“They play hard to try to get rewards. We enjoy it and hopefully, we can give them some more rewards after Marshall game”
Overall you can tell that Helton has a lot of respect for Marshall. This will be a major challenge but I've noticed a business-like nature to these press conferences and it shows that this team is expecting to win and take care of business week to week. Hopefully, that carries over to Saturday.
Tune back for a lot more coverage for the Moonshine Throwdown. WKU Football will not only clinch bowl eligiblity with a win but take a huge step towards an East Division title. Marshall is the next test for the Hilltoppers to pass. Hopefully, Tyson Helton has his team ready for Saturday.
