With spring football in full swing, WKU football got some interesting scheduling news as Brad Stephens from the Bowling Green Daily News reported that the season opener against Central Arkansas will be moved from Saturday, August 31 to Thursday, August 29.
UCA, an FCS program, went 6–5 a season ago.
Given the stature of the opponent, I think this is a good move for the program and should help build excitement for the new season on college football’s opening night and the head coaching debut of Tyson Helton. Students and fans can catch the game before their labor day weekend plans start and the crowd should be comparable to the Rice (19,286 during Thursday in 2016) and EKU (18,614 during Saturday in 2017) openers.
WKU will get to take the stage locally as there aren’t any marquee or local games that fans will miss by attending the WKU game.
Here are the other FBS games nationally on that Thursday:
With C-USA’s TV deal in flux, I could easily see this game going to ESPN+ or Stadium. Hopefully, the Tops take care of business against the Purple Bears and build momentum from a solid performance. WKU will get an extra couple of days (nine total) to prepare for their trip to FIU on September 7. They’ll need those as FIU will be one of the preseason favorites in Conference USA. A win there and WKU can really start off the Helton era in exciting fashion.
