On Tuesday, WKU running back Marquez Trigg announced he’s leaving the Hilltopper program and will look to play his fifth and final eligible year elsewhere.
That…is a strong statement from Trigg, who didn’t thank Mike Sanford, the current Hilltopper coach, but did thank Brohm.
Now, to be fair, I suppose it’s safe to say that’s why he’s leaving — so far this season, Trigg has only touched the ball nine times for a total of 12 yards.
Last season, he logged 51 carries for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
Trigg, a Glasgow native, redshirted his freshman year in 2015 and rushed for 298 yards on 71 carries and two touchdowns during the 2016 campaign.
It’s safe to say he saw the writing on the wall was there for him to not have very much playing time this year — with a running game still trying to figure itself out plus freshman like Gino Appleberry and Garland LaFrance getting opportunities, Trigg maybe felt unwanted or that he was being overlooked.
Regardless of what went into the decision, I wish all the best for the young man and hope he lands in a good spot for 2019 and beyond. I’ll always pull for him.
