WKU Football: Scrimmage Brings Week 3 of Spring Ball to Close
I very well could be misremembering springs past, but so far this has been a very quiet spring ball for WKU.
I very well could be misremembering springs past, but so far this has been a very quiet spring ball for WKU.
Maybe some of that is because of the…lack of hype, we’ll say…surrounding the 2018 campaign, coming off a six-win year and with expectations tempered (to say the least) for the coming year.
But, by the same token, with so many new guys breaking onto the field, you’d be thinking there would be a lot more talk about it.
Regardless, week three of spring ball is over, as the Tops’ culminated that with a scrimmage on Friday.
“We’ve got to clean it up at the quarterback position,” head coach Mike Sanford said after the fact to the media. “We did some good stuff, but having some red zone turnovers and our Red (Team) offense (first team) scored on the first drive, a nice drive, just took the ball down the field but they were slow after that.”
Needing to clean things up at QB shouldn’t come as much of a shock, as the combined stable has a total of 18 games played, 17 of which are appearances by Drew Eckles. However, I’d assume after three weeks we’d see someone begin to emerge, or at least have the ground starting to settle underneath them, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
But, if it was scrimmage jitters and the first time anyone has performed in that type of setting, we can let it slide. For now.
“It wasn’t up to standard at the quarterback position. There were moments that were good but, overall, it wasn’t our best day,” Sanford continued.
But, there were positives to be seen, according to Sanford.
He was complementary of the defense, but always with the hint of that being the case because of the number of mistakes on the offense.
He also commented on the progression of the run game, and even shouted out D’Andre Ferby, “Ferby had his best body of work I’ve seen since I’ve been here. He’s been running hard, running through knicks and bruises. He’s been good.”
Sanford finally lamented about how guys who haven’t, or have rarely played, are getting reps, and with how barren the Tops are in experience, that’s the best we can hope for is guys are going through the motions in any capacity before they take the field.
To finish things out, Sanford discussed being “crisp” on offense, noting too many turnovers due to quarterback/center exchanges, and something that both shouldn’t be too worrisome and will be item number one looking for in the spring game and into the fall. If whoever wins the QB battle doesn’t have a good repertoire with Dennis Edwards (or whoever wins out at center), it’ll be a long Friday night against the Badgers to open 2018.
