WKU Football: Tops Announce 2023 Schedule
Get out your new 2023 calendars, it’s time to write down some dates!
We now know WKU’s full football schedule for this year! Let’s take a look, shall we?
After going 9-5 the last two seasons, the Tops have a slew of new opponents to play this year, in non-conference and C-USA.
The Tops will start the season with USF at home. USF struggled immensely last season but hired Tennessee’s offensive coordinator Alex Golesh as their next head coach so they could potentially be better this upcoming season.
Next up is Houston Christian (formerly Houston Baptist) at home which is where Tyson Helton got Bailey Zappe, Jerreth Sterns, and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley from that made the 2021 season so special.
WKU’s first away game is quite a doozy: playing at Ohio State. OSU narrowly lost to eventual national champion Georgia so this is one of the toughest tasks that a WKU team has had in a few seasons. Just remember that WKU will receive $1.8 million dollars just for going up there and playing the game so at least the bag is secured regardless of the outcome.
Also on the road is a return game to Troy. WKU played Troy in Bowling Green this past season and lost 34-27. Troy went on to win the Sun Belt and finished 12-2 on the year as well as being nationally ranked. It’s unclear just how much the Trojans will return for next season but I’d still look for this to be a tough game for the Tops.
As far as Conference USA, there will be a lot of changes. FAU, Rice, UAB, UNT, UTSA, and Charlotte are all leaving and New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, Jacksonville State, and Liberty will be added. WKU will face each new C-USA opponent, most of them being at home.
Another thing to note this season is that there will be midweek games in October after a new media deal was worked out for C-USA.
With that in mind, WKU will face MTSU, Liberty, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston State all at home. Having these teams at home will help make things easier for the Tops, especially the Liberty game.
WKU will travel to Louisiana Tech, Jacksonville State, UTEP, and FIU. I think this is one of the easiest road slates that the Tops could have. All very winnable games.
Well, there you have it! How do you think the Tops will do next season? Let us know! We’ll have more articles in the offense as well as leading up to next season so be sure to follow along.
