After losing four straight, the Tops finally get back in the win column and take down the Monarchs in Norfolk, 43–20.
The Hilltopper offense had 513 yards and Bailey Zappe finished with 397 yards on 37-of-54 passing with five touchdowns and one interception. His star target Jerreth Sterns finished with 13 catches for 221 yards and one touchdown.
The Hilltopper defense did much better today. Old Dominion would finish with total 446 yards but got three turnovers and at least five sacks and held the Monarchs to three points in the first half.
In the first quarter, the Tops were finally able to keep from getting in a big hole and were able to get 14 points while the defense only allowed 51 yards. One of the touchdowns being this ridiculous game of hot potato in the endzone.
The second quarter was more of the same. The Tops were able to get two more touchdowns as Zappe finished with 329 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone. The defense would make plays for the Tops as well including an interception by Kincade and a forced fumble before halftime. ODU would eventually score a field goal and the Tops would lead at halftime 30–3.
In the second half, the rain started to fall as the scoring slowed. More field goals for each team made it 33–6 WKU at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, ODU would try to come back and got within a two possession game but a late touchdown pass from Zappe sealed the deal.
The Tops (2–4) will now prepare for FIU (1–5) in Miami next week.
