WKU Football: Tops Release Full 2022 Schedule
Time to see the who, what, when, where, and why of the Tops’ football schedule for next season
On Tuesday afternoon, WKU football released their full schedule for fall of 2022. The Tops went 9-5 this past season and were runner ups in C-USA and finished with a win against App State in the Boca Raton Bowl.
Let’s take a look at that schedule:
One thing I find interesting is that there are five non-conference games rather than just four. That’s because teams that travel to Hawaii get an extra non-conference game (that’s in the continental US, of course). This will be the first time that the Hilltoppers get to take a trip to the Aloha state when they travel there on September 3rd.
WKU will play Austin Peay to open the season on August 27th in LT Smith stadium. The Tops will also have a rematch against Indiana in Bloomington on September 17th. WKU barely lost to the Hoosiers at home last season and it would be just one of the two wins Indiana would finish the 2021 season with.
WKU will also host old Sun Belt foe Troy Trojans on October 1st and the second to last game on the Tops’ schedule is the Auburn Tigers in Auburn on November 19th.
Looking at C-USA play, we would normally say things will go as listed but Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss have announced they planned to leave C-USA this year. The problem with that is C-USA announced today that they expect to start the 2022 season with all 14 members and also said they will “exhaust all necessary legal actions to ensure all members meet their contractual obligations” so it looks like we could be in for a dramatic and hairy offseason at the conference level.
With the conference games, the biggest one to me is a C-USA title game rematch at UTSA on October 8th. This game should be fun to watch and would give us a good indicator of where this team stands almost halfway through the season.
I also wish it was still the Moonshine Throwdown with Marshall ending the season rather than Charlotte but with all the conference drama who knows if that game will still happen or not. Same with the ODU game as well.
Overall, I think this is a pretty solid and winnable schedule for WKU to have after coming off another strong year.
