WKU Football: WKU at Ball State — Initial Thoughts

It’s now two days post a three-point loss to Louisville and I’m still feeling alright about it. I know there’s been a lot of chatter on Twitter and the like about how moral victories shouldn’t be had here, but I’m not sure I can agree with that.
At the very least, I’m fine with claiming a moral victory due to the circumstances; you’re coming off a home defeat to an FCS squad (regardless of how good they are) and then you go to not just an in-state rival, but a P5 in-state rival, and you don’t just hang with them, but you assert your dominance over three and a half quarters?
If the Tops get a couple of bounces to go their way, it’s a WKU victory. And you might be sitting there saying, “Well, yes, that’s just football,” but that’s the point. The Tops found themselves in the middle of a dog fight of a football game, and no one (except me, at least) thought that’d be the case.
Anyway, today begins a new week. To amend the words of Bill Belichick, it’s on to Ball State.
The Cardinals are 1–2 to open the season, having defeated their FCS opponent and found themselves in a couple of close games against P5 squads, with a 24–10 loss to Notre Dame and a 38–10 loss to Indiana.
Here’s what I have in mind as we open Ball State week.
We knew the opening quarter of the season would be brutal and this will bring that to an end. Opening three of four on the road isn’t easy and that has been very present for the Toppers.
The big thing all week is going to be if/how the Tops roll the positive momentum from UofL into BSU.
One way I hope the positive momentum rolls is by giving the starting job to Davis Shanley. He is the best man for this job and we’ll elaborate more as the week continues.
Was the running game success a blip on the radar or was it actual success? Hopefully the latter.
Kind of along the same lines, how great was it to see D’Andre Ferby on Saturday? Vintage 32 out there. Above all, I hope his bat out of hell running continues.
Ball State is allowing and surrendering the same amount of points per outing — 22.7. Interesting.
We’re still waiting for the first win of the year. It’s a strange place to be in but if things continue to trend upward this’ll be the last year like this in a while. I know I’m sounding hopeful but let me — things could be very rosy at the end of the year if the rest of the games see the effort from Saturday.
