WKU Football: Zappe to Tops a Top 10 QB Transfer — 247Sports
Another day, another reason to get excited about Bailey Zappe being under center for the Hilltoppers this coming season.
Another day, another reason to get excited about Bailey Zappe being under center for the Hilltoppers this coming season.
Today’s hype piece is courtesy of 247Sports, who dropped a list of their Top 10 QB transfers ahead of the 2021season yesterday, with Zappe coming in at number nine.
“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, not much was seen from some of the best players at the FCS level last season, including Zappe. Houston Baptist was only able to play four games last fall, but Zappe was impressive in the brief amount of time he was able to show it,” Nick Kosko writes.
Kosko also adds about his addition to the Tops, “The Hilltoppers have a need at quarterback as last year’s starter, Tyrrell Pigrome, was a senior a season ago. If Zappe can provide Western Kentucky a lift at quarterback, 2021 could be a big campaign for the Hilltoppers,” which might be one of the biggest understatements of the article (WKU has been in need of reliable quarterback play since at least the departure of Mike White).
The Tops are one of just three G5 teams on the list, along with Memphis (Arizona transfer Grant Gunnell, #6) and SMU (Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai, #2).
It’s been a good week for Zappe and those who are hoping he lives up to the hype — he was named the #48 FBS quarterback in the country earlier this week by the folks at Pro Football Focus.
In a four-game season last year, Zappe completed 65.6% of his passes (141–215) for 1,833 yards and 15 touchdowns while throwing just one interception (in a 66–38 loss to Louisiana Tech).
Extrapolate those numbers over a more traditional 12-game season, that’s nearly a 5,000-yard passing, 48 touchdown year (also a pace of 420 completed passes).
