WKU Football: Jarret Doege Enters Transfer Portal - Report
It would appear it's Austin Reed time on the Hill.
As you were laying your head down for your first slumber ahead of a new work week, some major WKU news broke as 247Sports’ Chris Hummer reported that West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege, the presumptive QB1 for 2022 for the Hilltoppers, has entered the transfer portal.
This leaves West Florida transfer Austin Reed as the presumptive QB1 for WKU, with the season set to get underway in less than two weeks.
Throughout camp, the intel we were receiving from sources within the program said that Reed was performing just as well as, if not better, than Doege and this news seems to confirm that.
Despite his being named to a pair of watch lists this preseason - the Maxwell Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award - the NCAA’s active passing leader is reportedly looking for a new program.
With the dust starting to settle under center a bit, here are the two things WKU fans can look forward to:
Reed is a Zappe-archetype, coming from the seventh-best offense in Division II (475.6 yards per game in 11 games) and the second-best scoring offense (44.5) in the nation last year, playing in what many consider to be the best conference in DII
He has two years of eligibility left so, barring his leaving early for the draft (something we’ve yet to see from a WKU quarterback in the FBS era), we may finally have some stability at the position, if only for a couple of years.
Reed threw for 3,418 yards last year (207-for-378) and tossed 38 touchdowns for eight interceptions.
As for Doege, we’ll have to wait and see where he lands. You’d imagine an available DI-caliber quarterback with nearly 10,500 yards and nearly 80 touchdowns to his name will get another opportunity and rather quickly.
