After announcing his decommittment from WKU back on the first of October, earlier this week Alabama defensive end Devin Bell softly re-committed to the Tops.
“It’s a family-oriented staff,” Bell told The Towel Rack in an email interview. “I also noticed that WKU play big teams in the upcoming year,” Bell added. “I consider WKU one of the best options that will allow me to face other big schools.”
High praise coming from someone who chose WKU over the likes of Purdue and Louisville.
His desire to play against top competition comes as no shock if you’ve seen his Hudl highlight tape. A man among the boys of Alabama’s high school ranks, Bell swarms to the ball, is explosive off the snap, and has the hunger to make not just a play, but the play.
Whether it’s fans joking or not, it’s been a talking point this year about whether or not the disappointing 6–6 season will turn some recruits in the best recruiting class in Conference USA away from the program. For Bell, not only is that not an issue, it’s a non-factor.
“Western Kentucky didn’t have a disappointing season; they made it to a bowl game, and that’s the whole goal,” he said.
When asked about his style of play, Bell says he’s a “pass rusher that can also stop the run.” That’s an added bonus for next year’s squad, as the Tops’ pass rush was lacking, and if he impresses in practice, has an opportunity to make an impact on a defense that totaled just 10 sacks all season.
And, about that whole making an early impact — Bell says it isn’t out of the question at all. “I believe I will see playing time as a true freshman if I put in the work and stay healthy.”
