It was an above-average active day for a mid-June summer, as the Hilltoppers were front and center when it came to basketball recruiting news on Wednesday.

Meyer announces decommitment

Holy Cross (Covington, Ky.) point guard Jacob Meyer tweeted Wednesday that he was reopening his recruiting process, effectively decommitting from WKU.

After talking with my family and coaches about what is best for my future, I have decided to reopen my recruiting process. Thank you Wku and Coach Martin for everything

Meyer had previously announced his WKU commitment on November 8.

At the time of his commitment, Verbal Commits rated him as a two-star prospect and he held offers from Northern Kentucky and IUPUI.

Shortly after his announcement Wednesday, Meyer tweeted saying he had garnered an offer from Miami (OH).

Meyer’s decommittment is the first of it’s kind for Rick Stansbury: An in-state product that Stansbury was in on the ground floor of before other schools came sniffing around.

It’ll also prove to be a test of Stans’ new strategy with the transfer portal - if Meyer does get sniffs from bigger programs and opts to go to one but it doesn’t work out, WKU could still very much be in play, a la Dionte Allen.

Tops in the running for top transfer

It’s down to three for one of the top available transfers of the off-season, former Arizona and Boise State forward /guard Emmanuel Akot, according to Rick Stansbury’s #1 fan, Jeff Goodman.

Akot averaged 10.6 points, a career-best, and 3.1 rebounds last season with the Broncos, starting 29 of 31 games for BSU.

While listed as a forward on his 247Sports recruiting profile, Boise State used him as a guard and the thought of him in the Hilltopper backcourt is worth salivating over.

He can handle the ball and shoot from distance and while not as lethal driving as you’d wish someone with his size would be, can still get the job done when he does.

If WKU ends up being Akot’s destination, he would be the sixth newcommer to the Hill in 2022/23, according to our roster tracker.

Big Red Bits

A smattering of other recruiting news for you on this Thursday.

Wednesday was the first day schools could contact players for the 2024 recruiting period and the Hilltoppers reached out to several.

According to Twitter reports, those included:

  • Ayden Evans (four-star)

  • Trent Noah

  • Travis Perry (four-star)
