Coach Tyson Helton was able to secure a commitment from Franklin-Simpson‘s speedy star running back Tre’ Bass, likely as a preferred walk-on.
Bass is listed at 5’8” and 180 pounds but what he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed.
He is listed as a three-star recruit according to 247 Sports and had offers from smaller schools including a walk-on offer to Murray State.
Being as impartial as I can be, I can say that WKU got a major steal by adding Bass to the team. I’ve lived in Franklin my whole life and got to see Franklin-Simpson play Johnson Central in Lexington for the KHSAA 4-A title a few weeks ago as FSHS won their second state title in three years, mostly in due to Bass.
Bass is a very quick runner and can bust through a hole with speed and can make defenders miss. He’s also a strong kick returner as well.
I firmly believe he never gained much traction recruiting wise due to his small size but having a small, speedy kick returner and runner is something that could help WKU on special teams and he is also very effective with short screen passes.
Bass broke both Franklin-Simpson’s single-season rushing yards (1,872) and rushing touchdowns (29) records in a season this year and was a very reliable player who helped the Wildcats become a dominant team in their region the past three years.
I hope Bass can go the same route Russellville’s Tacorian Darden did at WKU. Darden joined the Tops as a walk-on but ended up working his way up to earn a scholarship and became a starter on WKU’s defense last season.
Either way, I believe coach Helton got a steal by adding Bass to his roster by getting a fast and explosive rusher to his recruiting class.
By our count, this is the 18th commit the Hilltoppers have in the 2019 class, joining:
