WKU hoops signee Mitchell Robinson put on quite a show at the Jordan Brand Classic this past Friday evening in Brooklyn against some of the nation’s most talented high school players in the class of 2017.
Coming off the bench for the East squad, the 7-ft senior from Chalmette, Louisiana scored 15 points shooting a perfect 7-7 from the floor with most of them being emphatic dunks.
Even though he came off the bench at the start of the game, it didn’t take long at all for him to start making an impact on the court. He was able to get 11 points in just four minutes on the floor in the first half and led all players with 13 points going into halftime.
He rightfully started the second half and finished with 15 points and three rebounds. He also had three fouls for the contest as well, which was probably the only blemish that he had the entire game.
Looking at how Robinson played against some of the top players in the whole country, every WKU fan should feel hope and excitement for next season.
Robinson on the offensive end at the JBC was literally perfect. Like 100% from the floor perfect. Sure it might have been just dunks, but his ability to finish at the rim in most situations is clearly remarkable. While Robinson is known as a great defensive player and shot blocker, he didn’t get any blocked shots during this contest but one off game defensively should be no reason of concern because his full body of work speaks otherwise. Overall, he was able to put together quite an offensive performance that proves he IS one of the top centers in the entire class of 2017 and garnered high praise from several hoops analysts and experts including the likes of Jon Rothstein:
And Rothstein DEFINITELY has a point. Robinson will more than likely make the most individual impact to the school that he attends than anyone else in will for their school in his class. While Middle Tennessee has continued to dominate the conference in recent memory (okay fine, two years), a lot of the teams in the C-USA have been very lackluster over the past few seasons making the C-USA irrelevant to most people.
But with WKU landing someone as high-profile as Robinson helping the Hilltoppers class of 2017 be in the top 10 nationally, that could easily put the school and the conference as a whole back into the national spotlight and relevancy. The C-USA probably hasn’t had a center as talented as Robinson since Marshall had Hassan Whiteside in 2009–2010, who has since been making a massive impact for the Miami Heat in the NBA, which means people will have their eye on Robinson the whole season.
While everyone’s expectations for WKU next season are extremely high, so is the talent of players they will have. And while we may have seen just a glimpse of what Robinson is capable of in the JBC, it still is enough to give WKU fans hope that next season will be a stellar season for the Hilltoppers.
