On Tuesday, a defensive utility man from metro Atlanta announced he had garnered an offer from Tyson Helton and the Hilltoppers: Class of 2021’s Cole Nelson.
Cole Nelson
6'3", 230
Defensive End
Johns Creek High School (Atlanta, Ga.)
Class of 2021
Nelson is a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and is ranked the 48th-best 2021 prospect in the Peach State.
247Sports lists 13 offers, mostly from G5 programs but does have interest from Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Nelson looks built more like a tight end than an edge rusher, and part of me wonders if a school might make him a work in progress and turn him into more of a linebacker than a lineman. While he’s not explosive off the line nor especially elusive in avoiding contact at the line, but the word that comes to mind is “slippery” — he’s able to get out of the clutches of someone and make his way into the backfield.
Georgia continues to be a priority for the Hilltopper program. The Peach State has produced many Hilltopper greats over the past decade including Bobby Rainey, DeAngelo Malone, and Juwaun Jones. Tyson Helton signed 7 Georgians in the 2020 class.
WKU currently does not have a verbal commit for the 2021 class.
