As Americans the world wide round celebrated their independence, Western Kentucky fans were celebrating getting two commitments for the class of 2019.
On Wednesday afternoon, Nashville cornerback Travares Springer announced he’s joining the Tops’ 2019 recruiting class.
On Wednesday night, Valdosta, Georgia (an incredibly talent-rich area and is actually just about 90 minutes from where I live, in Tallahassee) outside linebacker Desmond Johnson announced he, too, will be joining Sanford and Sons (no? Keep working a nickname out? Okay).
247Sports doesn’t list a grade for Johnson, and lists only Kennesaw State as a competing offer from the Tops. Johnson is listed at 5'11", 180 pounds.
Not going to lie, before I saw the tape, I let the size and lack of other offers form an opinion on me. After watching the tape, I’m singing a totally different tune.
Three words come to mind about Johnson; fast, physical and hawkeyed. He doesn’t break towards a play unless he knows where the ball is going to go, and once he is dedicated to making the play, he’s going to go full speed and will ultimately make you play.
Desmond might not see the field immediately, but at least being around the Tops defense for a year and having some time to bulk up might help him in the future. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do against college competition.
Johnson is the 11th member of the 2019 recruiting class, joining Springer, Jordan Flack, Terrell Jennings, Daylen Powell, Mitchell Harralson, Clayton Bush, Joshua Black, Cory Munson, Stephone Atkinson and Dylan Morton.
