It’s been a busy couple of days around athletics on the Hill, what with the announcement of Russell being bounced as WKU’s uniform supplier and Nike coming in and the aftermath of the WKU Spring Game. But, the football team isn’t just hype about having played for the first time since December and getting new jersey’s. No sir-y.
Over the last week, the Tops have gotten a pair of verbal commitments, one from an offensive lineman and one from the defensive side of the ball.
On Friday, the Tops added their first member of the 2018 signing class in Sam Stovall, an offensive guard from Chattanooga, and a two-star recruit according to Rivals.
Yesterday, Missouri-native Zerryn Gines announced he was coming to the Hill, where he’ll be a preferred walk-on for the 2017 roster. Gines comes in at 6'0, 195 lbs, is listed as a safety, but our pals at Moonshine Throwdown listed him as an OLB. So, who knows how the Tops will use him.
I’m not going to pretend I know much about recruiting, but upon first look, I’m gonna assume both of these guys will take some time to get used to college ball before making an impact on the field. The Tops are about to have a first-round draft pick come from the offensive line and, hey, Stovall could be the next Forrest Lamp, but we might have to wait a while.
As for Gines, I like his heart, but that size worries me. He has some time to beef up and if he does and can keep the speed I assume he has at that size, he could become dangerous.
But, as I said, I don’t know much about recruiting so take my words with a grain of salt.
Regardless, welcome to the Hill, boys, and can’t wait to see yall in what I can only assume will be the freshest of threads come the next four years with Nike as the supplier.
