WKU Basketball: Toppers Land Boise State Transfer Who Flips From Memphis
Just over 48 hours after losing the Keyontae Johnson sweepstakes, WKU flipped Boise State transfer Emmanuel Akot to the Hill from Memphis.
On Saturday, we learned that Keyontae Johnson wouldn’t be coming to the Hill, opting to commit to Kansas State.
Late Monday evening, the Hilltoppers landed a splashy transfer anyway, as Jon Rothstein tweeted that former Boise State Bronco Emmanuel Akot had informed him he was leaving Memphis in order to join Rick Stansbury and the Tops.
WKU and Memphis were among the final three schools for Akot’s services - along with NC State - and in our last check-in on him back in June, we shared this tantalizing highlight reel that shows off his versatility on the floor.
The one blemish to Akot’s game, at least from that highlight tape, is he doesn’t drive as strong as you’d like a 6’8” ball handler to be able to do, but maybe that’s something he’ll be able to do take advantage of in Conference USA play.
Starting 29 of 31 games for the Broncos last season, Akot averaged 10.6 points (a career best) and 3.1 rebounds.
According to our roster tracker, Akot is the sixth newcomer to the Hilltopper roster ahead of the 2022/23.
As if they weren’t already sky high, expectations for this coming basketball season just rose even higher. Even Rothstein in his article writes that Akot’s addition “immediately makes Western Kentucky a threat to be one of the best non-power conference teams in college basketball next season, outside of Gonzaga.”
I hope to make few games this season in between my High School basketball games.
Coach has invited to a few practices which I don't take lightly.
